Sessions

OPENING PLENARY
ENERGY AND GLOBAL WARMING

The opening presentation will be delivered by Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency,( IEA). A review of latest climate change data will be presented as long as an analysis of the Covid 19 impact on society.

SESSION 1
ENERGY DEMAND – NEW TRENDS

During this session we will discuss the stability and flexibility of power through demand side management and smart grids, the increased importance and the urgency of energy efficiency improvements to reduce energy consumption, the development of electric mobility and the Korea plan for the energy transition ahead.

SESSION 2
THE FUTURE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY

In this session we will explore the possible role of nuclear energy in the decarbonization of power, China nuclear power generation expansion and the development of new nuclear technologies. A small modular argentine reactor project, CAREM, will be presented including a virtual tour of the plant being built at Atucha, close to Buenos Aires city.

SESSION 3
RENEWABLES

The accelerated growth of renewables energies, mainly solar and wind, will impact in batteries development, green hydrogen generation and the need of key raw materials like lithium, cobalt, rare earths, niquel and copper. An update of the CAETS 2020 report on power intermittencies will be presented.

SESSION 4
OIL & GAS

This session will deal with the challenges of fossil fuels, mainly oil and gas, to adapt to the proposed green house gas ( GHG) reduction goals, exploring the role of natural gas as a transition fuel and the need to reduce CO2 emissions through carbon capture and storage, as well as the possibilities to maximize nature base solutions to capture CO2.

SESSION 5
EDUCATION ON ENGINEERING

This session will deal with the role of engineers in the development of national plans to achieve emission reduction targets. An educational program for schools based on internet of things, IOT, will be presented,, and will also show an energy model developed by MIT used to educate students on the complexity of dealing with climate change and the different varibles involved. Will finish with a presentation on motivation by local engineering students.

CLOSING PLENARY
LATIN AMERICAN ENERGY OVERVIEW AND CAETS 2021 WRAP UP

In this final session we will review the international agreements reached by countries to reduce GHG emissions as well as a presentation on Latinamerican energy situation and future development plans.
A final summary of previous sessions will be presented.
